The Code of Conduct in Practice

Course Description

  • Are you aware of your responsibilities as a Councillor under the Code of Conduct?

  • If there was a planning application next door would you declare an interest? What type of interest?

  • What if the application was down the road but opposite your good friend's house?

This course will look at the practical operation of the Code of Conduct at parish and town council level and will answer all your questions as to what interests to declare and when. 

This is an interactive course   and offers the opportunity to network with Councillors from Councils across Northamptonshire to share best practice and ideas.

  • Practical operation of the Code of Conduct 
  • What interests to declare and when
  • How the Standards regime has changed 
  • Dealing with requests for dispensations 
  • Making arrangements for Councillors with an interest 
  • Complaints process 
  • The range of sanctions

All Councillors should attend this course to understand their duty to uphold high standards of behaviour in public life. This course will be of particular interest to Councillors and clerks who are trying to do a good job and need to understand the framework within which they operate.

He has been a parish councillor since 2003 and has had various roles on committees and working parties as well as Chair to the council.  He achieved Certificate in Local Council Administration (CiLCA) in 2008 and is a Principal Member of the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC).
